A sport whose origin is ancient Persia and whose age in unsurpassed, found a welcoming home in Argentina where the best players of the world literally grew up on horseback riding through the scarcely populated countryside.
There are three options to choose from to experience Polo, all available in English & Spanish:
ATTEND A POLO MATCH
The most important polo season occurs in the spring and takes place between August and December. The autumn season is between January and July.
There are several different clubs which host tournaments on weekends throughout the season and, if you are interested in going to a match whilst you are here, we will be happy to give you more information and make reservations.
Tournaments usually the take place in Palermo, Hurlingham Club or Tortuguitas Club. We can book a package that includes transportation, tickets, snacks and bilingual guide who will explain you all the rules during the game.
Please write to us at reservations@poetrybuilding.comto check which games are available during your stay with us.
POLO DAY TOUR
Another way of experiencing Polo, during the entire year, is to visit a polo ranch.
This is a full day activity that includes transportation to a polo field outside of Buenos Aires. It starts with an informative talk about the sport itself and the ponies. While you try some delicious empanadas and excellent argentine wine, the guide will explain how polo horses are selected for the sport, their breed and how they are trained. You will also learn about the rules of the game, the equipment used by the polo horses and the players, and about the different shooting techniques. Then you will witness a professional live polo match of 4 chukkas.
Next, you will visit the pony line and learn about how a polo horse is taken care of, its feeding and preparation for a match.
At lunch time you will have a complete barbeque that includes “asado”, a grilled selection of different cuts of meat*.
After spending some relaxing time at the swimming pool (in good weather**) or walking through the beautiful countryside, you will take a polo lesson where you will learn to ride a horse, hold the mallet and hit the ball.
It is not necessary to know how to ride a horse, nor do you have to have previous experience. They offer equipment and instruction for all levels and speak English and Spanish.
